1. Mazda 3
Pros – Stylish interior and infotainment systems; external styling is classy and well-packaged; ride and handling balance is exceptional
Cons – 2.0-litre engine gets the job done but is thirsty and needs to work hard; cabin insulation still doesn’t match class leaders; Sport mode seems redundant in this spec level
2. Volkswagon Golf
Pros – Fast and fun to drive; sounds great; majority fuss free ownership so far; looks cool with the sign writing!
Cons – DSG transmission not smooth at low speeds; traction control program almost too intrusive; some minor infotainment and ergonomic issues that should be easy to address.
3. Ford Focus
Pros – Dynamically very impressive, blending involvement and enjoyment but not at the expense of comfort; lively turbocharged petrol engine; new media system is an improvement; decent equipment
Cons – No AEB as standard, and it probably should be considering the price premium Ford charges; lacking some storage smarts; boot on the small side
4. Honda Civic
Pros – Loaded with equipment including plenty of safety gear; refined and pushy little turbo/CVT drivetrain is effortless when you want it to be; good interior space, layout, comfort and packaging
Cons – Could be too dear for some, and there may be better value in the middle of the Civic line-up for most buyers; engine a bit noisy under hard throttle; steering is darty but lacks some feel
5. Skoda Octavia
Pros – Excellent throttle response and drivability at speed; steering accurate and responsive, with plenty of grip; thoughtful cabin with lots of space; big boot; affordable
Cons – Options list can be lengthy; ride a tad firm around town; some struggles off the line in terms of grip
